Over on my BlueSky, I’ve started another minor project. Every single day, I’m posting one game from my game collection. I’m leaning towards lesser-talked about titles that people may not have tried. To make things easier to digest, I’ll also be doing monthly wrap-ups of those posts here on one single page for easier viewing.
This month was dedicated entirely to the Playstation 1. I love collecting for this console due to the experiementation and creative problem-solving seen while developing for it. So this is a fun run of games this month.
I mean, why NOT make a fighting game about rock’em sock’em robots. Not necessarily GOOD… but they tried something more with this than you’d expect.A sequel/successor to Namco’s arcade game Dragon Buster. A really cool beat ’em up/RPG hybrid with unique branching paths that take the form of family descendants based on choices made in each level.Amazing space shooter from the team what made Gran Turismo. Really pushes the PS1 to its limits. Crazy spectacle for the time.An action game dripping in atmosphere. A little rough to play due to strange mechanical choices, but stylish af. You probable played it on a demo disc.A strange platformer with some genuinely funny cutscenes. Worth playing for the laughs alone.A classic racing franchise hits it’s peak. But setting aside its gameplay, what draws me to this one is its incredible art direction, oozing style while hitting you with a stellar soundtrack.A decently fun running racing game. Some fun character designs and solid controls makes it enjoyable.A must-own classic for PS1. Puzzle game with plenty of challenge but still has casual accessibility to pick up and play as well.
It even got an Astro Bot nod. 😛Not a good game, but a shockingly ambitious one. The open world you can drive around in is pretty huge for a PS1 game and surprisingly detailed and varied. Worth checking out for that alone.A silly sheep herding game that’s just enough frustrating challenge to keep you trying again.Anime Resident Evil but with robots. Every second I’ve played was another laugh out loud moment in absurdity.A fast moving action game with varied gameplay and a cool aesthetic. Challenging at times too.Sometimes all you need is a decent puzzle game slathered in usual Hello Kitty cuteness.Multiplayer ship combat. Takes awhile to get used to, but good for a few rounds with friends. The much-disliked sequel to a classic. While not as good as the first, it’s still an alright play in my opinion. Be ready for jank controls and camera though. It’s fair play! (I swear I didn’t pick it JUST for that joke alone…). A simple puzzle game that feels like a Game Boy game ported to PS1. Addicting though.A slightly more known pick, but one I still feel is slept on when PS1 JRPGs are discussed. Some of the best art/visual direction I’ve ever seen and pushed the PS1 to it’s limits. Gameplay is complex and story is amazing.A zany action platformer with cool environmental kills and a lot of variety in its level mechanics.A bit rough but enjoyable beat ’em up platformer. Also fulfills all your needs for cheesy John DiMaggio voice acting! Not particularly good, but certainly interesting to see how developers tried to make Pong into a fully fledged game with more mechanics and design.Half Zelda, half 3D platformer, all charm. Cute and full of clever adventure design. The “slightly ridiculous” simulator genre is not new to modern indie games and this shows it. Strange game unlike anything you’ve ever played…A really fun combat platform… racing… game using the Rayman 2 engine. Great with a friend.A good way to play the great classic. Even is touched up and “remastered”.Some late 90s ‘tude writing makes for a great twist on the tank action games that were so big in this era. From the developers of Twisted Metal comes Twisted Metal… but underwater!Under-appreciated arcade classics bundled together! Bubble-popping challenge in a great package deal.An interesting block breaker with a isometric perspective and a jump ability?OK HEAR ME OUT…A charming, challenging, unique action-RPG from Squaresoft that gets overlooked but shouldn’t be. Tons of fun and cartoony energy.
