Over on my BlueSky, I’ve started another minor project. Every single day, I’m posting one game from my game collection. I’m leaning towards lesser-talked about titles that people may not have tried. To make things easier to digest, I’ll also be doing monthly wrap-ups of those posts here on one single page for easier viewing.
A great remake/reimagining of Ys IV. Has a compelling story and blazing fast action. Also, to no surprise, a killer OST. Plus a remaster of this is coming out early next year on modern consoles!Maybe growing up with the show gave me a soft spot for the game, but I think it’s an amusing little mini game collection that’s worth playing for a bit.An amusing vehicle combat game with an oddly fun two player mode. Scratches that scifi vehicle itch too.Every bit living up to it’s hype. A GOTY contender that plays as a deeply intricate puzzle box. Give it a shot if you’re on the fence.A classic shooter remade for modern consoles. The cute aesthetic hides a bone crushing difficult game.A cute chibi animal filled adventure game, obviously meant for younger audiences but designed well enough to be fun.A throwback to PS1 era survival horror in every way, good and bad. Excellebt atmosphere and puzzle design, even if combat overstayed it’s welcome and the story fell short for me.Artdink’s weird underwater exploration game, oozing ambiance and mystery. Also fish.A challenging game to get into due to the wild jumping mechanic, but if you can get past that it’s a fairly unique platformer that makes you reconsider how you approach the simple NES platformer.Appreciate the classics. Even if it’s sometimes hard to. Because who knows how many more collection’s like this we’ll ever get.
A crazy combo that somehow works. I’m also very bad at both Puyo Puyo and Tetris so I’m especially awful at them both in one…
Some unique takes on classic Namco titles. Mostly gimmicky, but certainly interesting. And hey, how often is Pac ‘n Roll referenced?I’m going to give this game some love only for the ambition and crazy ideas it tries to pull off. Fun battle system and lofty design goals. Does it stick the land? Eeeeeeh
In the “so bad, it’d good” catagory. It’s silly and clunky and pretty dang ambitious. Randomly generated world (sorta?) and some hilariously awful animationa but god I like this dumb game.
The OTHER nes game with a side scrolling semi-open level design and first person point and click segments similar to The Goonies 2. Only not quite as good, and more spoopy and action-y.A dungeon based Zelda-like that is a lot of fun. More focused on combat than puzzles.A ridiculous chariot racing/combat game that’s arcadey as hell and certainly one of a kind.Purests will say this is the best version of Puzzle Bobble, and while I have other favorites, it is the best to start with if you just want the core game without bells and whistles.A cartoony well-animated platform with that Prince of Persia style cinematic/deliberate platforming control sense. Hard, but amusing.A more known title, but one that’s still quite enjoyable. It’s very shallow and not nearly as polished as it’s contemporaries, but it’s a blast to play. And hey, at least it’s not the modern one from a few years ago! 😀A crazy good collection of Capcom classics, from well knowns to obscure lesser knowns. A must have for arcade enthusiasts or people looking for hidden gems from Capcom’s hayday. I feel like people forgot about this franchise. Still a fun platformer with timed elements making it more quick and frantic than it’s contemporaries. All about finding that flow state and learning the levels. Like Sonic, but controllable.Fuck it, I’m just posting the original Bubsy today.
Luna recommends cat game. A beautiful story told through gorgeously animated cat antics. Great world design and puzzles organically worked in. An excellent adventure.
An attempt at a Bubble Bobble roguelite. Doesn’t quite stick the landing but shows the potential of applying a classic arcade game into a modern design style. While the remaster is very good, I’ve always preferred the Papa Nier version of the MC for this game. If you’ve only ever played Automata, the original is WAY more interesting imo. I also picked the 360 version ’cause it’s the 360th day of the year…A masterpiece we almost never got in the West. If you want to experience the depths of SNES era experimentation, this is a must play.A fun scrolling shooter with sorta-kinda open world design in so far as you choose paths at the end of each section. The NES version is different than the arcade version and worth the play time. This game feels almost arcadey in design with how it condenses the console FPS formula of the time down into smaller bite-sized levels. It also allows for cool details and chaotic challenge. Just a cool oddity of a game.An oft-overlooked part of Rare’s N64 output, but still as amusing and campy and fun as you’d expect. Deserves a second chance at life.Ending with one more overlooked Kirby banger. Arkanoid, but with some creative gimmicks and classic Kirby charm. A real fun playthrough.
