What Is The Mog Pile Project?

Look, I’m going to be real with everyone. I’m pushing 40 years old over here. And as they say, with age gains backlog. Or something like that.

I’ve been collecting video games seriously for about 15 or so years now. Not including piles of games from my formative years. Over time, I’ve managed to expand my physical library to well over 2000 games. Not to mention the countless fleeting digital games that will someday poof out of existence (or so the alarmists say).

Have I played all of those games? Absolutely not. Will I ever play all of those games? Only if that weird guy from Google finally figures out how to make human lives last like 300 years or so. But also no, because that sounds awful.

However, there are so many “must play” games that I’ve managed to not get to in my many years of playing video games. I blame that mostly on JRPGs being my favorite genre growing up, which means a lot of my gaming years were spent burying myself in a single game for weeks on end. It also didn’t help that I simply didn’t expand my genre net particularly wide. Platformers, RPGs, hacky-slashy adventure games? Sure. Shmups? Point and clicks? Shooters? Not as much.

So, it’s time I stop being lazy and do something about it. I’m going to slowly (and I put a ton of emphasis on S L O W L Y) plan on chizzling away at some of my gaming library and seeing if some of those “must plays” can make an impression. And what better way to force myself to do that than to turn it into a blog.

So that’s the crux of the project. My intention originally was to play a total of three games off my backlog per month (gotta make room for new games, as well as burying myself in Final Fantasy XIV because I have a problem), with the focus being:

  • One “Retro” Game
  • One HD Era Game
  • One Indie Game

However, I decided fairly quickly that the abitrary time limit put too much pressure on the project. Especially because I wasn’t going to finish every game I started. I wanted to give myself more breathing room for longer games as well, instead of pushing myself to only tackle shorter games that fit within the monthly limit.

So, the new project is to just continue picking away at my backlog with less timed pressure, and report back on this site as much as possible.

Or, you know, I’ll just quit a few months in and put 100 more hours into Terraria or something I probably shouldn’t do.

Anyway, wish me luck. And feel free to shoot me suggestions on BlueSky!
